Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of [Christ to] the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven.”(AMP)

Christ in our text gave two illustration to tell the significance of light. Firstly he used β€œa city on a hill.”  A city on a Hill cannot be hidden.(Matt 5:14b). Christ was simply saying that even as a city on hill cannot be hidden, so the Christian light is not to be hidden. It is to shine forth dispelling darkness wherever it find himself. You can’t pretend to have it! If you’re a child of God and your light is hidden, then your light need to be questioned.

The second illustration is verse 15a. β€œNor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand.” This point refers to something that could cover a lamp. Any hidden lamp is good-for-nothing. In time past, our church light up a candle during mid-week programs especially when there’s no electricity. Imagine if the candle stick was put on and place under a table. The meeting place will be dark and the impact of the candle light will not be felt. What Christ is simply saying is that it is foolish to light a lamp and hide it. See Mark 4:21 Luke 8:16.

Christ did not stop there, He went further to say that β€œyou light a lamp and put it on a lamp stand and it gives light to all who are in the house.” The lampstand is whatever you place your lamp on to elevate it, so it could illuminate the area.

In Matthew 5:16a He tell us why we need to let our light shine as believers; “let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven.” The Christian goal is to please God and to do those things that will glorify Him. Men can only glorify your God in heaven if and only when they noticed your good work! Let your light shine. To be continue tomorrow morning by God’s Grace. Good morning, happy Sunday and happy Christmas in advance, peace.

Prayer point: Holy Spirit, help me that my life will dispel every forms of darkness around me. I will light up the world you in Jesus Christ name. Amen!
