The history of Entertainment industry in Kogi state. (1993 till Date). Written by Baba Ojonugwa Jfo. I settled in lokoja with a dormant entertainment industry. We began BBs night club in 1994 at present day Lokoja club, then relocated to kewon hotel. We began Kogi beauty contest at cinema hall new layout with Mr. Jafo (an Ebira man & English lecturer with Kogi polytechnic) but we couldn't continue due to lack of support. Enny Boy (now Engel) the immediate elder brother to ZuleZoo dropped the first ever Kogi musical video ''TEACHER TEACHER'' & ''ABIOLA'' which NTA Lokoja played every evening before 7pm news. We Began the Explosives band with Moses Otiga, Roland John & Albert David, later joined by Patrice Adejoh, Claude Oritogun (bush Dr) & many others. SUNY music (now auto engr. Suny) at Alheri junction was the only studio for recording & his wife was the studio manager. I did "GO BACK TO THE BARRACKS" at a show in New Layout Cinema during the June 12th crisis and soldiers invaded the hall, brutalized us & till date I don't know how I escaped to Egbe & from there back to Ilorin. Jayiem rentals was the only chair & canopy rental company & they supported all our shows with huge discounts. The confluence FM came & Samy Lanky was the first voice, he started the stand up comedy business in Lokoja. Bright Chimezie came to Kewon Hotel to perform with his band in 1995, and our band the explosives got a slot to play, Lokoja went wild and loved us. Back then, Gen. Tunde Ogbeha who just returned as governor of Bendel state gave us quarterly slot to play in his house each time he was home, four times a year he feasted the whole lokoja town. In 1996, T.J Bala came with the hit song Ebiene & I was the first to play him on my TV show. I played him every Saturday morning for a whole year & together we toured all major towns of Igala land with our band for a whole month marketing his music. Lamina Nite club Ayingba was born. Then Prince Abubakar came & believed in us, we brought SUNY Ade, Daddy Showkey, Baba Fryo, Suny Okosun, etc. Courtesy of Alh TJ Bala. Late 1999, we got a mandate from NTA lokoja manager to shoot a ''docudrama'' movie to showcase the tourism potentials of Kogi state for the national television festival TELEFEST. I wrote the script & my friend Patrick was the lead actor with me as supporting act. The movie was directed by Mayowa/Chris Bello & from there a movie industry was birthed in Kogi. Mayowa later went to shoot a movie about Ovie osese in Ogori Land that won a national movie award at Telefest. Aseda Sunny Aseda started grooming children entertainers using the church & I partnered with him. Years later my manager, Yinka, introduced Triple A to me and we began a bossom relationship. I met Makolo Jnr Thomson a young boy with passion to carve a niche in movies and we had a chemistry as I did all I could to encourage his dreams by being an anchor of support in all ramifications. I encountered Jumabee a secondary school student with passion & a dream to make it musically & I urged him on and supported with all I had back then. My turning point was in year 2000 after performing at democracy day (May 29th) in government house. I was given a mandate by the governor, Late Prince Audu, to begin & develop the music industry in Kogi state with an appointment at the Kogi state council for arts & culture. Today; many years later; with many stories to tell, a wife and many kids both biological and non biological, the advent of Grace FM, I look back with Joy to see the many practitioners of the creative industry in & from Kogi state, these younger ones, their passion & zeal reminding me of when we started in 1993; all I can say is THANK YOU to my creator and everyone that has supported this dream till date. We aren't there yet but we are positively very far from where we began.
