EFCC Requests Trial of Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello in Absentia Over Alleged N80.2bn Money Laundering. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) asked Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja to proceed with Yahaya Bello’s trial in absentia. EFCC counsel Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, argued Bello’s non-appearance for arraignment should not hinder the trial, requesting the court to enter a ‘not guilty’ plea. Pinheiro emphasized the court’s role in upholding justice for all parties involved. Defense counsel Michael Adoyi opposed, citing a previous court order requiring Bello’s presence. Justice Nwite adjourned the case until January 21, 2025, for ruling and arraignment.
